Keyword Research with Google Search Console (No Paid Tools)
Discover hidden keyword opportunities using free GSC data. Find what you're already ranking for.
You don't need expensive keyword tools. The best keyword data you can get is already in your Google Search Console — for free. It shows you exactly what queries people use to find your site.
Here's how to use GSC data to find keyword opportunities you're probably missing.
Why GSC Data Is Better Than Keyword Tools
- It's real: This is actual search data from Google, not estimates
- It's personalized: These are queries for YOUR site
- It's free: No $100+/month subscription needed
- It shows opportunity: You're already ranking — just need to improve
The Four GSC Keyword Reports
1. Striking Distance Keywords
These are queries where you rank position 4-20. You're close to page 1 but not quite there. A small improvement can yield big traffic gains.
How to find them:
- Go to Performance → Search Results
- Click "+ New" → Filter by Position
- Set: Position greater than 3, less than 21
- Sort by impressions (highest first)
These are your biggest opportunities. High impressions + bad position = lots of potential clicks if you can reach page 1.
2. High-Impression, Low-CTR Keywords
You're showing up for these queries, but people aren't clicking. Either your title/description isn't compelling, or your position is too low.
How to find them:
- Enable CTR column in Performance
- Filter: Impressions greater than 100
- Sort by CTR (lowest first)
- Check position — if top 5, your title needs work
3. Content Gap Keywords
Queries where you rank but don't have dedicated content. Google is showing your page for something you didn't specifically target.
How to find them:
- Click on a high-traffic page
- Look at the Queries tab
- Find queries that don't match the page's main topic
- These could be new article ideas
4. Declining Keywords
Queries where your rankings are dropping. Catch these early before you lose significant traffic.
How to find them:
- Compare two date ranges (last 3 months vs previous 3)
- Sort by position change
- Look for queries where position increased (got worse)
- Check if the page needs updating
Turning GSC Data Into Action
For Striking Distance Keywords:
- Add the exact query to your title tag (if not already there)
- Create a dedicated section in your content
- Add internal links from other pages using that keyword
- Consider expanding the content
For Low-CTR Keywords:
- Rewrite your title tag to be more compelling
- Add power words: "Complete," "2025," "Free," etc.
- Improve your meta description
- Check if featured snippets are stealing clicks
For Content Gaps:
- Create new content specifically targeting that query
- Or add a section to your existing page
- Link between related pages
Example Workflow
Here's a 15-minute weekly keyword research routine:
- Monday: Check striking distance keywords, pick top 3 to optimize
- Wednesday: Review low-CTR queries, improve 1-2 titles
- Friday: Look at declining keywords, flag pages for refresh
Limitations of GSC Data
GSC is powerful but not perfect:
- Only shows queries you already rank for
- Data has a 2-3 day delay
- Doesn't show competitor keywords
- Limited to 16 months of history
For most site owners, though, optimizing existing rankings is more valuable than chasing new keywords. GSC gives you everything you need.
PageSEO automates this analysis. We scan your GSC data daily and surface the best keyword opportunities — so you don't have to dig through reports manually.
